Employment standards law

Each province or territory has its own employment standards law. These laws cover:

  • minimum wages
  • maximum working hours
  • required breaks
  • overtime pay
  • minimum vacation leave
  • statutory holidays
  • severance payments
  • other working conditions

Employment standards entitle employees to certain types of leave (for example, sick leave and parental leave). The laws protect the employees’ right to return to their jobs after taking leave or acquiring a disability, such as through cancer treatment.
