Cancer involving the eye or the nerves affecting vision may result in partial or complete visual loss. Brain tumours and brain tumour treatment may cause blurred or double vision that may decrease with time.
The type and severity of vision loss may affect ability to perform job tasks. Also, there are legal requirements regarding vision that could affect the patient’s ability to drive.
What patients can do
Advise your patient regarding the prognosis for recovery of their vision loss, what they can do to improve their function as much as possible and the advisability of driving. If necessary, refer them to other members of the healthcare team or other professionals.
Another important resource is the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), a Canadian provider of vision support services, for help with living as well as possible with vision loss.
